Japan: plan the station exit, not just the station

Connect city walks and nearby excursions without rushing. A few transport and meeting-point details make a real difference.

Build each day around one area

Choose your base, such as Osaka or Tokyo, and group nearby stops together. For a day in another city, include the return journey and the walk from the station, and check any reserved admission time first.

Make the meeting point precise

With many rail and bus services, check the operator and exit as well as the station name. Confirm card coverage or separate ticket requirements with the operator, and agree on a numbered exit or hotel lobby with your guide.

Give small streets and businesses room

Keep conversations quiet on public transport, queue, and check signs and consent before taking photographs. Follow instructions where shoes must be removed, and keep private property and residential entrances clear.

Recheck reservations and entry conditions

Check official opening days and booking procedures for restaurants or exhibitions you particularly want to visit. Verify entry requirements for your passport and trip purpose with official authorities, and save your accommodation address, bookings and return-flight details separately.

Treat the airport-to-hotel journey as your first outing

Arrange an arrival-day meeting around immigration and baggage collection, not the flight's landing time. For late arrivals, check the last transport and your hotel's check-in procedure first. Keep dinner near the hotel and only a short neighborhood walk so delays are easier to absorb.

Check payment and connectivity before a small purchase

Do not assume every shop accepts the same card or payment app; ask before ordering. Prepare modest cash for small purchases and another payment option if one fails. Confirm your data connection, save the hotel route, and keep the address accessible without a signal.

Check the official guidance

Entry requirements, opening hours and prices can change. Recheck the official guidance before departure.
