China: prepare addresses and payment before you go
From Shanghai's streets to intercity journeys, a little preparation with names, maps and payment options helps on arrival.
Save addresses in Chinese as well
Keep your accommodation's Chinese name and mapped address with the booking. Ask your guide for an exact meeting point and a reference photo so similar station names or entrances do not cause confusion.
Set up payment and keep a backup
Official guidance explains cash, cards and mobile payment options. Check your chosen service's international-card support, identity checks and fees in advance, and prepare another method if your first option is unavailable.
Match reservations to your passport
For rail tickets or attractions requiring named reservations, check the official booking channel's rules for names and passport numbers. Read the exact departure and arrival station names, boarding preparation and change or cancellation conditions too.
Check entry and connectivity for your route
Verify visa or transit conditions with official authorities using your nationality, purpose and actual itinerary. Check which services and coverage your connectivity product provides, and save addresses and bookings for offline access.
Get to know one neighborhood on arrival day
Check the transfer to your actual hotel and avoid distant sightseeing reservations immediately after arrival. Once luggage is settled, find a nearby meal stop and the next day's departure point. If a translated hotel name differs from the booking, compare the Chinese address and map location.
Be specific about explanations and meals
A profile displayed in your language does not guarantee guiding in that language, so confirm what the guide speaks. Agree whether you want historical explanations, help ordering in a market or photography, making a short booking more focused. For meals, check ingredients to avoid and portion sizes directly rather than only translating the dish name.
